This Program is Helping Workplaces Save Big on Electric Vehicle Charging Installations

Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program

In last week’s blog post, we talked about the exciting future of electric vehicles (EVs) in Atlantic Canada. We’re expecting to see massive growth in the market, and it’s estimated that by 2040, 25% of the vehicles on the road will be electric. Up until now, cost has been one of the main hinderances to adoption, but that is starting to change, and the government’s new Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) is one of the factors behind this.

The new program targets multi-unit residential buildings (three or more units), workplaces, and light-duty vehicle fleets (ex. taxis) and pays up to 50% of the Total Project Costs (up to five million dollars) for the installation of EV chargers. The program is also open for public parking areas, such as service stations, libraries, restaurants, medical offices, etc.

This program is one of the latest funding programs from Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative. The Government of Canada has set ambitious goals for federal electrification, and this program, among others, is part of their goal of zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) reaching 10% of light-duty vehicles (LDV) sales per year by 2025, 30% by 2030 and 100% by 2040.

Funding varies depending on the type of charging station, and details are as follows:

Type of InfrastructureOutputMaximum Funding
Level 2 (208 / 240 V) connectors3.3kW to 19.2kWUp to 50% of total project costs, to a maximum of $5,000 per connector
Fast charger20kW to 49kWUp to 50% of total project costs, to a maximum of $15,000 per fast-charger
Fast charger50kW and aboveUp to 50% of total project costs, to a maximum of $50,000 per fast-charger

The program is open for applicants until May 12, 2020. Eligibility details are outlined here and you can request an application package on NRCan’s website.

At Catalyst, we are excited to be a part of the future of electrification in Atlantic Canada as the Atlantic reps for Enel-X’s Juicebox Smart Electric Vehicle Chargers. The Juicebox chargers are some of the best on the market- they are simple to install and feature app technology, easy to use payment systems, and commercial, fleet, and utility management systems.

Here’s What You Need to Know About the Future of Electric Vehicles in Atlantic Canada

Here’s What You Need to Know About the Future of Electric Vehicles in Atlantic Canada

Enel-X Juicebox

When we think about renewables, we often think of the energy source itself, like solar power, but another huge player in the renewable industry is electric vehicles (EVs). The adoption of electric vehicles has had a slow start up until now, but they are expected to have a massive growth in Atlantic Canada over the next decade. Here’s what we can expect in the next ten years (and why we should all be excited about it).

Massive growth over the next decade

According to a recent report put out by HRM’s clean energy specialist, Kevin Boutilier, Nova Scotia had 176 electric vehicles in 2019 and that number is expected to jump to 8761 by 2020- a mind blowing jump in just one year. In 2019, there were 413 electric vehicles in Atlantic Canada, and this number is expected to continue to rapidly climb, and by 2030, estimates show that we should have almost 229 728 electric vehicles on the road. That number represents 10% of the vehicles in Atlantic Canada, and this is expected to rise to 25% by 2040.

enel X electric vehicle chargers

More EVs = more EV chargers

With this huge growth in EVs will come the need for more EV chargers. Currently in Nova Scotia, we have 40 charging stations (see location directory here), but the report estimates that we will need 2000 stations in the province by 2030 to accommodate the adoption of electric vehicles.

At Catalyst, we rep Enel-X’s Juicebox Smart Electric Vehicle Chargers. In 2019, we brought sustainability and renewables to the forefront of our company’s mission, and we are thrilled that partnering with Enel-X has given us the chance to enter the EV market. The Juicebox chargers are some of the best on the market- they are simple to install and feature app technology, easy to use payment systems, and commercial, fleet, and utility management systems.

What’s behind the growth?

Enel-XUp until recently, Atlantic Canada has seen a relatively slow adoption rate of electric vehicles, but as we can see, this is now changing. Much like solar power and other forms of renewable energy, electric vehicles were seen as something accessible only to the wealthy and were not affordable for the average person. However, the market isn’t what it used to be, and there are newer models available that are more affordable than ever before.

Not only that, but the savings in fuel are drastic, and as gas prices continue to rise, this is an increasingly attractive motivator for many Atlantic Canadians.

In his report, Boutilier looked at the savings that HRM would get from switching just 11 of their fleet vehicles to electric. He found that they would save $134 167 (or 19% of their budget) and reduce emissions by 292 tonnes (62% reduction in CO2 emissions) over the lifetime of the vehicles.

We are thrilled to be a part of this amazing development of the EV market in Atlantic Canada and are here to answer any of your questions! You can learn more about Enel-X’s Juicebox chargers here or reach out to Matt, our Renewable Energy Specialist, at matt@catalystsales.ca

How to Use Lighting to Enhance Your Home Decor

How to Use Lighting to Enhance Your Home Decor

Hinkley Fletcher

Fixture: Fletcher from Hinkley | Design: Cynthia Zamaria

When is a light fixture more than just a light fixture? In our opinion, always! Lighting has such a massive impact on a room’s style, but it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Consider how different a room would look when lit by harsh florescent lighting versus the warm glow of a sunset and some carefully placed wall sconces. Or think about the difference between the look of a regular old “boob light” versus a cool chandelier. Lighting and light fixtures can have a drastic effect on a room, so in today’s blog post, we’re showing you how to make the most of your lighting and use it to enhance your home decor.

Let in the natural light

Asime Mitzi

Fixture: Asime by Mitzi | Design: @aframe.on.fletcher

While we love a good light fixture, there’s really nothing that beats natural lighting. Even the most impeccably decorated room doesn’t have them same appeal if it has little to no natural light when compared with a room flooded with daylight. While controlling the amount of daylight you get is tricky, you can do some things to help let in as much light as possible. First of all, avoid anything that blocks the windows, including curtains and blinds. If you do want to use curtains, make sure you hang them so that the rod extends past the frame so you don’t block any part of the window when they’re open.

Hanging mirrors around the room can also help to enhance the light in the room as it can bounce the light from the windows into the rest of the space. And finally, painting and decorating a room in light colours will help it to feel brighter and enhance the natural light.

Match your fixtures to your decor

A light fixture can have a major impact on the look of a room, and while they are primarily for function, the style of the fixture you choose is also hugely important. Whether you’re going for a mid-century modern style, coastal feel, or minimal decor, choosing a light fixture that matches your space will take your room decor to a whole new level. You can see in the above photos how much a light fixture can change the look of a space! Designer Cait Pappas of @nest.out.west used both the Hendrix and the Breuer fixtures from Troy Lighting in her home. Both are gorgeous, but each give the room their own distinct style.

Get the placement right

Where you place your light sources in your room also has a big impact on the look and feel of your space. Overhead lighting, for example, illuminates an entire space and brings the room together, but it can feel too harsh if you’re trying to create a warm and cozy space or mood. Lamps and wall fixtures, on the other hand, can really help to create a warm glow in a room, but they may not be bright enough to be used on their own during the day. If you want to make a space feel larger, you can use wall sconces pointed towards a wall, or track lighting above cupboards.

Lighting a room properly takes more than just flicking on a light switch. You want to consider the look and feel you’re going for, as well as what functionality you’ll want from your lighting.

Choose the right light bulbs

Margeaux Hinkley

The cozy glow of warm lighting. Fixture: Margeaux by Hinkley| Design: @alfieandoz

There is a surprising amount of variety in light bulbs, and choosing the right brightness and temperature can have a big impact on the vibe of your room. First off, you want the brightness to suit the look and function of your room, and brighter isn’t always better. Light fixtures that are meant to light a full room or large area, like your overhead lights or main floor lamps, should typically be brighter, while smaller lights, like sconces and table lamps, should typically be a little less bright to keep from overpowering a space. If possible, get your lights on a dimmer, so you can adjust them when you want.

The next thing to consider is the temperature of your bulb- some light bulbs are warm and give off more of a glow, while others are much cooler and are more similar to daylight. A warm and cool bulb can look very different in your home, so you want to choose the temperature that fits your space. You can also try a bulb like the DALS Smart Bulb, which allows you to switch back and forth between warm and cool lighting. This lets you go with warm lighting (great during the evening, when you’re entertaining, to create a cozy mood, etc.) and cool lighting (perfect during the day).

Our Favourite Scandi-Style Light Fixtures

Our Favourite Scandi-Style Light Fixtures

Orion Mitzi

Fixture: Orion by Mitzi | Design: @citysage

Minimal, yet welcoming, modern, yet a classic, Scandi style somehow manages to encompass it all. With clean lines, natural materials, and subtle mixed textures, it’s a style that has withstood the test of time and continues to be one of our all time favourites.

The trick to nailing the Scandi look is to keep things minimal and clean, but use natural elements to add coziness and warmth. This isn’t about austerity- it’s about creating a fresh, classic, modern space that’s cool and inviting.

We’re firm believers that the right lighting can make or break a room, and light fixtures can add so much to your room decor. To help you get that perfect Scandi style for your own space, we’ve chosen our favourite light fixtures. Your home is just a good light fixture and a faux fur rug away from nailing the trend!

You can find location showrooms in Atlantic Canada for all of the fixtures mentioned in this post on our Where to Buy page.

If we could choose one light fixture to be the face of Scandi style, this would be the one. The clean, neutral style with wooden detailing makes it a textbook scandi fixture (doesn’t this just scream IKEA?!).

The BIDFORD is available in both black and white (white is a little more Scandi, but the black is equally cool!).

It’s not available as a table lamp, but for a table lamp option in a similar style, check out Eglo’s CHIETINO

See the BIDFORD family here.

Hinkley Argo

We like to think of the Argo as Industrial-Scandi. Its smooth and simple design is a perfect match for the style, while the metal detailing adds a little something extra.

The Argo is available in white or black and in both small and medium, so you can pick the perfect style for your space.

If you’re going for a Scandi kitchen, we love the look of two of the small Argos over a kitchen island.

See the Argo family here.

Riku Matteo

The cool minimal design with subtle cutouts made the Riku fixture an instant hit with us. Its simple design gets a little something extra from the geometric shapes and looks good just about anywhere.

See the Riku family here.

Orion Mitzi I

How cute is the Orion? We love the simple yet quirky oval shape and two toned pendant.

The Orion is available in aged brass, old bronze, and polished nickel. The pendant is available in two sizes, and it also comes as a table lamp.

5 Stunning Mid-Century Modern Light Fixtures We’re Loving Right Now

Willa Mitzi HVL Kassandra DeKoning

Fixture: Willa by Mitzi | Design: Kassandra DeKoning

Mid-century modern is having a serious moment, though saying that would imply that it’s being revived when really, it’s never gone away. The timeless trend first appeared on the scene between the 1930s and 1940s (depending on your sources), but the sleek lines and natural-meets-modern pairing has been going strong ever since.

While many looks come and go, choosing a mid-century modern look to your home ensures a classically cool look that you won’t be rushing to update in a few years time. To help you nail the look, we picked out a few of our favourite mid-century modern light fixtures.

And as always, all of the fixtures we mention can be found on our Where to Buy page!

The 2020 Lighting Trends We Can’t Get Enough Of

The 2020 Lighting Trends We Can’t Get Enough Of

We have such an exciting post this week! Our friend Robyn from Bricks + Birches is on the blog for her second annual Trend Report. If you’re not already following Robyn and her gorgeous designs on Instagram, make sure you hop over and give her a follow now.

Now, without further delay, let’s take a lot of Robyn’s favourite lighting trends for 2020. And as always, you can find any of the fixtures mentioned below on our Where to Buy page.

Hi Readers!

It’s Robyn from Bricks + Birches back for a little trend forecasting! I always love this time of year as lots of new releases are hitting the shelves and I feel SO ready to soak up some new ideas and inspirations. Here are 3 trends that team B+B have on our minds for 2020!

For the last few years there has been a real shift to “Boho” trends for a relaxed, eclectic feel. Fast forward a few years and the look has grown up. Think glamorous, femme finishes mixed with rattan and macrame. The look is eclectic, but luxe. A few faves from of this look are the Jai-Alai Collection from Corbett Lighting, and the Brookville pendant from Hudson Valley Lighting.

Remember the Minimalist shapes from last year’s blog post? They’re still here but they’re softening up. Natural stone, oiled wood, and raw textures are a beautiful juxtaposition to minimalist forms. We’re also loving a return to small scale ceiling lights over pot lights. The Aragon, or Loris from Hudson Valley Lighting would be absolutely incredible illuminating a long hallway.

We are SO ready for this! Don’t get us wrong; we love a casual, livable home. But you cannot deny a little *extra* sometimes. We LOVE these vintage florals, the art deco influence, and dare I say it but…a little bling. Imagine the Floral Park chandelier over a soaker tub, or a pair of Saavy sconces flanking a piece of contemporary art. Ugh, we’re not worthy!

We’ve said it before and we will say it again; lighting is not only a critical part of your space’s function, but it’s the jewelry of the space. Don’t be afraid to experiment with mixing styles or creating contrast through decorative lighting. Similar to how accessories can transform your wardrobe, lighting can update and transform a space with even less commitment than a coat of paint. Have fun with it! 🙂

Interested in Solar Energy? CUA’s Energy Efficiency Financing Program Can Help

solar energy halifax nova scotia
We’ve written before about the solar energy financing and rebate programs available in Nova Scotia, and today we wanted to share another option that is making the adoption of a solar energy system even more affordable for Nova Scotians: CUA’s Energy Efficiency Financing Program.

CUA’s program offers a number of great benefits, some of which extend beyond the other current programs available, and it’s a great option for anyone in Nova Scotia looking to make efficiency upgrades to their current system.

The program offers financing options for both home and business owners interested in investing in energy-efficient upgrades. We’ve seen a major surge in interest for solar energy throughout the province, and having another financing option available is a huge win for the renewable energy industry in Nova Scotia.
